What we track

Deposit products includes every active CD and HYSA in the database — standard CDs, no-penalty CDs, bump-rate CDs, and all HYSA variants — all verified against institution source pages. Products are scored by APY, early withdrawal penalty, and minimum deposit using the formula on the Methodology page.

HSA providers are scored on fees (40%), investment quality (35%), and usability (25%). Every provider record includes cash APY, monthly fee structure, investment menu size, and mobile app rating.

Credit cards covers 461+ cards across all major categories — travel, cash back, balance transfer, business, dining, grocery, hotel, and airline. Each card has per-category earn rates, score finals, and bonus offer tracking.

Institutions tracked counts the distinct banks, credit unions, issuers and lenders with an active product across the network (the same count as the homepage). An additional discovery pipeline monitors 50+ institutions weekly for new products not yet in the database.

Monthly rate studies

Each month we publish a savings rate study from this data: median high-yield savings, money market and CD APYs by term at the start and end of the month, and how many rates rose or fell. Every study links to its figures as JSON.

Data sources

Every rate and fee is sourced from the institution’s own website. National average benchmarks come from the FDIC National Rates and Rate Caps publication (updated monthly). Card data is sourced from issuer pages and verified against the cards_feed_staging database updated by the cards scan Edge Function. No rate, fee or score is entered without a confirmed source URL logged with the record.

Verification process

An automated scanner flags candidate rate changes on a rolling schedule. Each candidate is checked against the institution’s own rate disclosure page before being committed to the database; no rate change is logged based on a scanner flag alone. Changes can therefore appear a day or more after they take effect — accuracy takes priority over speed — and every record shows when it was last verified.

API access

The data powering this page is available to licensed publishers and developers via the ByTheMath data API. See the API page for tiers and access. Rate history, product scores and institution metadata are all available via the REST API.
